Chery Omoda 5 Recall: 600 Cars In 2024, 8,878 In 2026. What Changed?
![]()
In 2024, Chery Malaysia recalled 600 Omoda 5 SUVs following a rear axle incident. Fast-forward to October 2026, and another recall involving the same model now covers 8,878 vehicles.
That's nearly 15 times the number included in the earlier campaign. But there's an important distinction: a larger recall doesn't automatically mean more vehicles have been confirmed defective.
So, what has changed between the two campaigns, and what should Malaysian Omoda 5 owners know about the latest development?
TL;DR: What You Need To Know
2024: Chery recalled 600 Omoda 5 vehicles as a precaution after identifying 60 vehicles fitted with affected rear axle components.
2026: A separate recall now covers 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles, involving the C and H variants.
Important: The latest recall figure does not mean all 8,878 vehicles have confirmed defects. The technical cause of the latest incident has not yet been publicly established.
For owners: Chery says recall-related inspections and component replacements are free. Replacement parts are being delivered in stages.
What Happened During The 2024 Omoda 5 Recall?
The earlier incident occurred in April 2024, when an Omoda 5 suffered a rear axle failure that prompted an investigation into the affected component. As Carz reported in May 2024 , Chery traced the issue to miscalibrated welding equipment at a component supplier.
According to the manufacturer, a welding tip had been replaced during a facility upgrade, resulting in incorrect equipment calibration. Chery subsequently identified 60 vehicles fitted with affected rear axle components, produced on 15 August 2023.
However, rather than limiting its precautionary campaign to those 60 vehicles, Chery expanded the exercise to 600 Omoda 5 SUVs fitted with rear axles manufactured between 14 and 17 August 2023.
The company also began arranging inspections and replacements. By 12 May 2024, 59 of the 60 identified owners had been assigned service appointments .
Chery Omoda 5 Recall: 2024 vs 2026
The latest recall follows another Omoda 5 rear axle detachment incident in Johor Bahru , which renewed attention on the model's earlier recall history.

On 14 October 2026, Chery confirmed that the new campaign involves 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles, covering the C and H variants.
Unlike the 2024 campaign, the precise technical cause of the latest incident has not yet been publicly established. There is also no confirmed finding that both incidents share the same underlying cause.
SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON
Two Recalls, Two Different Figures
| Details | 2024 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicles Included | 600 | 8,878 |
| Vehicles Identified With Affected Components | 60 | Not publicly disclosed |
| Technical Cause | Welding equipment miscalibration | Not yet publicly established |
| Corrective Action | Inspection and replacement | Free inspection and component replacement |
Sources: Chery Auto Malaysia statements dated 4 May 2024 and 14 October 2026. These are separate recall campaigns. The figures do not establish that the same defect occurred in both cases.
Does 8,878 Recalled Mean 8,878 Defective?
This is an important distinction when interpreting the latest recall announcement.
WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN
8,878 Recalled Does Not Mean 8,878 Confirmed Defective
A recall covers vehicles identified for inspection or corrective action. It doesn't automatically mean every vehicle has a confirmed defect.
In 2024, Chery identified 60 vehicles fitted with affected components but expanded its precautionary campaign to 600 vehicles.
For 2026, the equivalent figure for vehicles confirmed to have defective components has not been publicly disclosed.
The larger recall population therefore tells us how many vehicles are included in the latest campaign. It does not, by itself, establish how many have defective components or whether the manufacturing issue is identical to the one identified in 2024.
What Is Chery Doing About The Latest Recall?
Chery says it has identified the vehicles included in the latest campaign and will proactively contact their owners. All vehicles covered are eligible for free inspections and component replacements at authorised Chery service centres nationwide.
The manufacturer has also confirmed that the first shipment of replacement components has been dispatched, with parts being delivered to service centres in stages.
The latest campaign has also attracted regulatory attention. Carz previously reported on JPJ's intervention and the confirmed developments surrounding the recall , including the temporary suspension of the relevant Vehicle Type Approval and new registrations pending investigations.

Chery says recall-related inspections and replacements are free. For vehicle-specific safety guidance, including whether an affected vehicle should be driven while awaiting an appointment, contact Chery directly.
What Still Needs To Be Clarified?
Although the latest announcement provides clearer guidance for owners, several technical details remain unresolved. These include the precise cause of the October 2026 incident, the production batches covered by the new campaign, and the expected timeline for completing the recall.
Importantly, the available information does not establish that the welding equipment issue identified in 2024 is responsible for the latest incident.
Chery Omoda 5 Recall: Frequently Asked Questions
Are all 8,878 recalled Omoda 5 vehicles defective?
Not necessarily. The figure represents the number of vehicles included in the recall campaign, not the number confirmed to have defective components.
Is the newer Chery O5 affected by this recall?
The newer Chery O5, launched in Malaysia in September 2025, features a multi-link rear suspension instead of the original Omoda 5's torsion-beam setup. However, this difference alone should not be used to determine recall eligibility. Owners should check their vehicle's VIN through Chery Malaysia's official recall checker.
What if I haven't received a recall notification?
You can check your VIN through Chery Malaysia's official recall checker or contact an authorised Chery service centre for assistance.
Ultimately, the difference between the two campaigns goes beyond the numbers. In 2024, Chery identified a manufacturing issue and a specific batch of affected components. In 2026, the recall covers a much larger population, although the latest technical findings have yet to be fully disclosed.
For Malaysian Omoda 5 owners, the immediate priority is straightforward: check your vehicle's recall status and arrange the necessary inspection if affected.
