F1 Disappeared From Sepang For 9 Years. It Came Back And Immediately Broke A Record

Sepang International Circuit normally gets around six to seven months to prepare for a major race. This time? Less than two. Yet just days before Formula 1 cars race at Sepang for the first time in nine years, nearly 100,000 tickets have already been sold.
And somehow, that is now the highest ticket-sales figure in the history of races held at Sepang, according to SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif. Not bad for a race Malaysia wasn't even supposed to be hosting this year.
- Nearly 100,000 tickets sold
- Only around 3,000 tickets remained in SIC's latest update
- Highest ticket sales recorded for a race held at Sepang
- Less than two months for SIC to prepare
- First F1 race at Sepang since 2017
Nearly 100,000 Tickets, With Only Around 3,000 Left

SIC says preparations for this weekend's Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia are now 100% complete, with almost all logistics cargo already arriving ahead of the event. But the number that really jumps out is the ticket counter.
According to SIC's latest update reported by Bernama, nearly 100,000 tickets have been sold, leaving only around 3,000 grandstand and hillstand tickets. And this isn't merely a big number by 2026 standards. Azhan says it represents the highest ticket-sales figure in the history of races held at Sepang.
Just days earlier, the circuit had already passed approximately 95,000 three-day tickets, with SIC hoping to cross the 100,000 mark by race weekend.
But, those buyers aren't all Malaysians. SIC says around 50% of ticket buyers are international visitors. So this isn't evidence that nearly 100,000 Malaysians suddenly decided they missed Formula 1. It's a huge international crowd converging on Sepang for a race that almost nobody expected Malaysia to be hosting at the start of the year.
Sepang Had Less Than Two Months To Pull It Off
Getting Formula 1 back onto the circuit was one thing. Getting Sepang ready for a modern F1 weekend at extremely short notice was another. Azhan says SIC would normally have around six to seven months to prepare for a race of this scale. For this one, it had less than two.
Less Than 2 Months This Time.
Sepang already retained the FIA Grade 1 status required for Formula 1, but hosting an actual F1 weekend involves considerably more than simply opening the gates and repainting a few kerbs. The paddock was among the areas requiring upgrades, while preparations also involved infrastructure, logistics, safety requirements and coordination between Malaysian and Bahraini teams.
And now, according to SIC:
It's ready.
So Why Has This Race Become So Huge?

There's probably no single answer. And importantly, the ticket numbers alone don't prove that Malaysians suddenly want the Malaysian Grand Prix restored permanently. Around half of the buyers are coming from overseas.
But there are several things making this weekend unusually special. For starters, it's the first Formula 1 race at Sepang in nine years. It's also being treated as a one-off event, meaning fans have no guarantee they'll be able to do this all over again next year. There has clearly been domestic demand too, with the specially priced RM200 MADANI ticket allocation for Malaysians selling out.
And then there's Sepang itself. This isn't some temporary venue hastily drafted into the calendar. It's a circuit with nearly two decades of Formula 1 history, huge overtaking opportunities, brutal tropical conditions and a layout that drivers have long appreciated. We've previously broken down why Sepang remains one of F1's most memorable modern circuits.
Put all of that together, and suddenly nearly 100,000 ticket sales don't look quite so mysterious.
Still impressive, though.
Very impressive.
- Nine years since F1 last raced at Sepang
- A potentially one-off opportunity to see F1 back at the circuit
- Strong interest from both Malaysian and international fans
- Specially priced Malaysian tickets helped broaden access
- And, well... it's Sepang.
There's One Thing Sepang Can't Completely Control
The circuit may be 100% ready. The atmosphere above it is another matter.
For now, though, preparations are complete and the focus is firmly on getting race weekend underway.
Going To Sepang? There Are Free Shuttle Buses Too

With a crowd approaching six figures expected across race weekend, getting everyone to and from Sepang is going to be almost as important as what happens on the circuit. Rapid KL and SIC are deploying 95 free shuttle buses for the Oct 2-4 race weekend.
- KLIA Terminal 2 bus hub, Level 1
- Mitsui KLIA bus hub
- De-Village, Persiaran Millenia 2, Bandar Baru Enstek
Shuttle buses will also operate within the circuit to help spectators move between key locations.
