Reviews

Summary

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is a high-performance electric crossover offered in Malaysia as a single dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. Priced at RM443,888 on-the-road without insurance in Peninsular Malaysia, it is sold on an indent, made-to-order basis. Matte exterior finishes add RM3,000.

Its electric motors produce 609 PS and 740 NM normally, increasing to 650 PS and 770 NM with N Grin Boost. An 84-kWh battery provides up to 448 KM of WLTP range, while the vehicle and battery are both covered for eight years or 160,000 KM.

Interior

Dashboard

The dashboard combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen within a curved display panel. A head-up display and digital centre mirror provide additional driving information and rearward visibility.

Centre Console

Unlike the open console in the regular IONIQ 5, the N model receives a fixed track-focused centre console with knee pads and shin supports. It also incorporates storage, a sliding armrest, USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad.

Instrument Cluster

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster displays speed, battery status, motor output, tyre information and driver-assistance functions. N-specific layouts also present battery temperature, lap data and performance settings.

Seats

N Light sports bucket seats are upholstered in recycled poly Alcantara and leather, with reinforced bolsters and illuminated N logos. The front seats include heating and ventilation, while the outer rear seats are heated.

Space

The long 3,000-MM wheelbase and flat EV floor provide generous legroom for five occupants. Despite its performance focus, the cabin remains spacious enough for family and everyday use.

Steering Functions

The N-exclusive steering wheel provides dedicated controls for N Grin Boost, N drive settings and custom performance presets. Paddle shifters operate the simulated N e-Shift transmission or regenerative-braking settings.

Storage Space

Storage areas include the glovebox, large door pockets, centre-console compartments and an open lower tray. The sliding centre armrest provides further storage without reducing support during hard cornering.

Cup Holders

Two cup holders are incorporated into the front centre console, while rear passengers receive additional drink holders within the folding centre armrest and door pockets.

Charging Ports

USB-C ports are available for front and rear passengers, together with a high-speed Qi wireless charging pad. Vehicle-to-Load functionality can provide up to 3.6 KW for powering external electrical devices.

Build Quality

The cabin combines Alcantara, leather, black trim, sustainable materials and Performance Blue stitching. Chequered-flag-inspired graphics and metal pedals reinforce its motorsport character without sacrificing everyday refinement.

Boot Space

The rear luggage compartment provides 480 litres of capacity, expanding to approximately 1,540 litres with the second-row seats folded. The rear seats also slide forward by up to 135 MM for additional cargo flexibility.

Exterior

Body Dimensions

The IONIQ 5 N measures 4,715 MM long, 1,940 MM wide and 1,585 MM tall, with a lengthy 3,000-MM wheelbase. Ground clearance is 142 MM, reflecting its lower and more performance-focused stance compared with the regular IONIQ 5.

Front View

The front receives an N-exclusive mask graphic, functional mesh sections, enlarged cooling openings, air curtains and active air flaps. Luminous Orange detailing across the lower bumper further distinguishes it from the standard model.

Rear View

At the rear, a prominent wing-type spoiler, N-specific bumper, air outlets and aerodynamic diffuser improve high-speed stability. The Luminous Orange lower accent continues around the body for a more aggressive appearance.

Headlamps

LED projection headlamps feature Hyundai’s Intelligent Front Lighting System, together with automatic operation, LED daytime-running lights and High Beam Assist.

Tail Lamps

The LED rear combination lamps retain Hyundai’s Parametric Pixel design theme. A high-mounted LED brake lamp is integrated beneath the large rear spoiler.

Side Mirror

Power-adjustable exterior mirrors include integrated turn indicators. Blind-Spot View Monitor can display a live camera image within the digital instrument cluster when the driver activates a turn signal.

Brakes

The braking system uses 400-MM ventilated front discs with four-piston monobloc calipers and 360-MM ventilated rear discs. N Brake Regen supplements the mechanical brakes with up to 0.6 G of regenerative deceleration.

Wheels

The IONIQ 5 N rides on 21-inch forged aluminium wheels fitted with 275/35 R21 Pirelli P Zero performance tyres. Their lightweight construction reduces unsprung weight while providing greater cornering grip.

Features

Active Safety

Standard active-safety equipment includes ABS, electronic stability control, hill-start assistance, multi-collision braking and tyre-pressure monitoring. Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist can also apply the brakes if an obstacle is detected during low-speed manoeuvres.

Passive Safety

The Malaysian model is equipped with six airbags, comprising front, side and curtain protection. ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, powered child locks and three-point seatbelts are also included.

Drive Modes

Available modes include Eco, Normal, Sport, N, Custom 1 and Custom 2. Drivers can separately configure steering weight, suspension stiffness, power delivery, stability control and front-to-rear torque distribution.

Infotainment

The 12.3-inch touchscreen supports navigation, Bluetooth, voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Performance menus allow drivers to configure the motors, suspension, steering and track-related functions.

Driver Assistance

Hyundai SmartSense includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go, Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist. A surround-view monitor and Blind-Spot View Monitor assist when parking or changing lanes.

Sound System

An eight-speaker Bose premium audio system with an external amplifier is standard. N Active Sound+ additionally uses the interior speakers and two exterior speakers to generate selectable performance sound profiles.

Performance

Engine

The front electric motor produces up to 175 KW or 238 PS, while the rear motor develops 303 KW or 412 PS with N Grin Boost. Their combined output reaches 478 KW or 650 PS and 770 NM

Transmission

Both motors use single-speed reduction gearing. However, N e-Shift simulates the gear changes, rev behaviour and torque interruptions of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission through steering-wheel paddles and programmed feedback.

Drivetrain

The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system powers both axles, while N Torque Distribution allows the driver to adjust the front-to-rear power split. A rear electronic limited-slip differential improves traction and corner-exit performance.

Acceleration

The IONIQ 5 N accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 3.4 seconds with N Grin Boost and Launch Control activated. Top speed is rated at 260 KM/H.

Fuel Consumption

Its 84-kWh lithium-ion battery provides up to 448 KM of WLTP range. The 800-volt architecture supports 10.5-KW AC charging and up to 350-KW DC charging, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 18 minutes under suitable conditions.

Comfort

Convenience

Convenience equipment includes smart-key access, push-button start, a height-adjustable powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, wireless charging, a fixed Vision Roof and a digital centre mirror.

Rear Air Vents

Dedicated rear air ducts are included with the dual-zone automatic climate-control system. Heated outer rear seats further improve comfort for second-row passengers.

Ride Comfort

Electronically Controlled Suspension continuously adjusts damping according to road conditions and the selected drive mode. Although firmer than the regular IONIQ 5, it can be softened for everyday driving or stiffened for track use.

Sound Insulation

The electric drivetrain remains quiet during relaxed driving, while upgraded rear acoustic glass helps reduce outside noise. Wide performance tyres may generate more road noise than those fitted to the regular IONIQ 5, especially over coarse surfaces.

Wrap Up

Conclusion

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N combines supercar-level acceleration with genuine driver-focused technology. Its N e-Shift system, adjustable torque distribution, electronic limited-slip differential, strong brakes and battery-management functions make it far more engaging than a conventional high-powered EV.

It also retains the spacious cabin, practical boot, fast charging and everyday usability associated with the IONIQ 5. However, the RM443,888 price, firm ride, limited 448-KM range and costly performance tyres may discourage buyers seeking a more conventional family EV. It is best suited to enthusiasts who value handling, track capability and driver involvement rather than outright range or value.
