JPJ Terengganu Calls Out Young Riders Over Alarming Rise In Riding Unlicensed & Helmetless

Ops Motosikal Kuala Terengganu

If you’ve spent any time on the roads of Kuala Terengganu lately, you’ve probably noticed how lively the local riding culture is. But according to the authorities, a highly worrying shift in attitude is brewing among the younger generation of motorcyclists when it comes to basic road safety and accountability.

Following a massive Ops Motosikal sweep carried out across the bandar Kuala Terengganu area, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) did not hold back in criticizing a growing mindset of indifference among youth.

Terengganu JPJ Director Mohd Zamri Samion expressed deep concern after discovering that scores of young riders are treating core legal requirements, like carrying identification documents and keeping active vehicle insurance, as completely optional.

Here is why the authorities are raising the red flag over our youth’s laid-back road habits, and the exact statistics backing up their frustration:

1. Slamming The "Could-Not-Care-Less" Attitude

During a media briefing after surveying the operations, Director Mohd Zamri explicitly stated that the habits observed among local youth reflect a highly careless and casual attitude (sikap sambil lewa). He emphasized that road safety requires serious responsibility, and treating essential documentation or compliance as a minor afterthought is a dangerous trend that needs to stop immediately.

2. Playfully Dodging The System With Card Tricks

The structural reason behind the director’s callout comes down to a deliberate "trick" being deployed on the ground. When stopped during checkpoints over insurance or vehicle issues, young riders are increasingly denying having their identity cards or driving licenses on them, often claiming they simply "forgot." JPJ notes this behavior is a calculated attempt to avoid having their ownership status verified and to stall official enforcement actions.

3. A Loud Reminder to Take Digital Licenses Seriously

The department pointed out the irony of young riders making paper-thin excuses in a tech-driven ecosystem. JPJ highlighted that with the integration of lesen digital (digital licenses via smartphones), the "I left my wallet at home" defense no longer holds any weight. The director strongly urged the younger generation to shift their mindsets, start taking digital credentials seriously, and ensure their profiles are ready for inspection on the road.

4. The Shocking Sweep Receipts: 333 Penalized In Kuala Terengganu

The sheer scale of the operation reveals just how widespread the lack of seriousness has become. Throughout the enforcement exercise, JPJ personnel checked a whopping 4,774 motorcycles. Out of that massive pool, a total of 333 riders faced immediate punitive action for failing basic road requirements.

5. Busted On The Basics: Helmets, Mods, And Missing Licenses

When the penalization receipts were printed, JPJ revealed that the youth weren't just slipping up on documentation, they were ignoring foundational safety rules. The most common offenses tearing through the Terengganu youth cohort included:

  • Operating motorcycles without a valid driving license entirely.
  • Riding around the city center completely helmetless.
  • Modifying their bikes well outside of authorized legal specifications.

Is it time to change the casual road culture?

It's easy to look at traffic stops as a minor annoyance, but JPJ Terengganu's latest callout reminds us that road safety rules exist to protect lives, not just to hand out fines. Trying to bypass the database by leaving your IC at home or treating helmet rules as optional proves that a culture change is urgently needed.

In an era where a digital license is always sitting right inside your pocket, there is truly no excuse left for being casual. If you're a young rider heading out onto the roads, it's time to mask up, gear up, and take the laws seriously before you end up as part of the statistics.
