Next-Gen BMW 5 Series Set for 2024 Debut with An Electric i5 Twin

2022 has been a busy year for BMW. With the launches of several EV models such as the BMW i7 flagship EV, BMW i4 sedan as well as the BMW iX EV SUV, the Bavarian marque will also replace its current G30-generation 5 Series with a new generation successor.

As reported by Autocar UK, the next-gen BMW 5 Series is set for a debut later in 2024 where it will be joined with an all-electric variant, dubbed as the BMW i5. Several petrol-powered 5 Series models will also be electrified as hybrids, this aligning with BMW’s commitment in delivering seven million PHEVs and EVs by the end of the decade.

However, BMW has yet to disclose the powertrain details for the upcoming 5 Series presently. The current G30 5 Series uses the similar CLAR platform as both the new BMW 4 Series and the electric BMW i4 model. This suggests that the next-gen 5 Series could come with similar powertrains should it retain the platform it underpins.

This could mean the new BMW i5 will potentially be offered with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration, just like the i4. The recently-launched BMW i4 boasts an 80.7 kWh battery pack that grants the i4 a maximum travel range between 410 to 590 KM.

Autocar’s report further suggested that the PHEV variants of the new 5 Series will likely retain the current 530e and 545e naming, both primed with 4-cyl and 6-cyl petrol mills respectively. Aside from the PHEV variants, the fully-ICE 5 Series variants are likely to reprise their roles as well in their upcoming new generation.

Unfortunately, the range-topping 5 Series, the M550i is rumoured to be axed entirely for the next generation, as the brand pushes to expand its electrified line-up. Currently, the BMW M550i boasts a V8 powertrain that delivers 523 HP.

As for the next-gen BMW M5, rumour has it that it’ll probably get an electrified makeover as well, especially considering the tightening emission regulations that hinder fully-ICE sportscars’ mass production.
The new 2024 BMW 5 Series is poised for a full-on unveiling some time in 2023, ahead of its market debut the following year.
