Proton Sold 40,000 e.MAS Cars. But That's Not Even The Most Interesting Number

40,000.

That's how many Proton e.MAS vehicles PRO-NET says it has now delivered, just 20 months after the brand was launched. On its own, that's already a pretty impressive milestone for a Malaysian EV brand that didn't exist two years ago.

But there's another number we find even more interesting.

That's how many Proton e.MAS 5s were registered in Malaysia in August alone, according to JPJ registration data. And that was enough to put an electric car in fifth place among all new vehicle models registered in Malaysia that month.

Not fifth among EVs. Fifth overall.

Ahead of it were four cars that need almost no introduction to Malaysians: the Perodua Bezza, Perodua Axia, Proton Saga and Perodua Myvi. In fact, Carz previously reported that the e.MAS 5 finished just 108 registrations behind the Myvi in August.

So perhaps the more interesting question isn't how Proton e.MAS reached 40,000 deliveries. It's whether numbers like these mean EVs are finally starting to become a normal Malaysian car purchase.

An EV In Malaysia's Top Five Is Pretty Significant

Look beyond one unusually strong month and the e.MAS 5 still stands out. From January through August 2026, JPJ data shows 17,837 e.MAS 5 registrations, making it Malaysia's seventh most-registered vehicle model overall during that period. That puts an EV in company normally dominated by Malaysia's familiar petrol-powered mass-market cars.

And August wasn't merely a Proton record. Malaysia registered 8,833 EVs during the month, with EVs accounting for around 11.4% of all new vehicle registrations.

A few years ago, an EV entering Malaysia's overall top five would have sounded rather ambitious. In August, it actually happened.

But There's A Pretty Big Catch

Before declaring that Malaysia has suddenly become an EV nation, look at which EV Malaysians were registering. Of those 8,833 EVs registered in August, 4,770 were Proton e.MAS 5s. That's about 54% of Malaysia's entire EV market for the month from a single model.

And here's where our "are EVs going mainstream?" question becomes complicated. Take the e.MAS 5 out of August's figures and registrations for every other EV combined actually fell, from 4,535 in July to 4,063 in August. That's a very different story.

Malaysia's EV market is unquestionably getting bigger. But at least in August, its record growth was overwhelmingly driven by one particularly successful car. So perhaps Malaysians aren't embracing every EV equally. Perhaps they've found one EV that fits the Malaysian mass market particularly well.

The e.MAS 5 Changed The Equation

Price almost certainly belongs somewhere in this conversation. Unlike the premium-priced EVs that initially introduced many Malaysians to electric motoring, the e.MAS 5 competes much closer to the territory occupied by ordinary mass-market cars.

But price alone doesn't explain everything There's also the Proton badge, an established nationwide automotive presence and an ownership ecosystem that PRO-NET has been expanding alongside its growing EV fleet.

And 40,000 delivered vehicles means the next challenge becomes increasingly obvious:

It's no longer only about convincing Malaysians to buy an EV. It's about supporting all those people after they've bought one.

40,000 Cars Need Somewhere To Charge, Service And Repair

Interestingly, much of PRO-NET's latest announcement isn't actually about selling more cars. It's about what happens after the sale. PRO-NET says its network now spans 60 dealers nationwide, supported by more than 1,600 trained sales and aftersales personnel.

By the end of 2026, it is targeting 70 outlets, including 57 service centres and 14 Body & Paint centres. It also claims 98.8% parts availability and says it is continuing to develop certified EV technicians together with MARA.

Those numbers might not generate the same attention as 40,000 deliveries. But if EVs really are moving towards the Malaysian mainstream, this is the less glamorous infrastructure that becomes increasingly important.

Selling tens of thousands of EVs is one thing. Keeping tens of thousands of EV owners happy is another.

And Proton Is Giving Those 40,000 Owners A Few Extras

The milestone also comes with something more immediate for existing owners.

There's another interesting addition too. PRO-NET is introducing PassGo, which gives owners 300 welcome points after linking their vehicle and subsequently awards one point for every eligible kilometre driven.

Those points can be exchanged for rewards including Grab, Touch 'n Go, foodpanda and Lazada vouchers. Useful perks, sure. But they're arguably another indication of where Proton e.MAS is heading next: from simply selling electric cars towards building an ecosystem around owning one.

So, Are EVs Finally Mainstream In Malaysia?

We're getting much closer, but there's an important asterisk. An EV taking fifth place in Malaysia's monthly vehicle rankings is difficult to dismiss as niche. So is an 11.4% monthly EV share. And so is one Malaysian EV brand delivering 40,000 electrified vehicles within 20 months.

But the same data also tells us not to get carried away. August's EV boom was disproportionately driven by the e.MAS 5. One model accounted for more than half the market, while registrations for the rest of the EV market combined declined from July.

So 40,000 Proton e.MAS deliveries shouldn't automatically be interpreted as 40,000 votes of confidence in every electric car.

What it does show is arguably more interesting.

A few years ago, the big question was whether Malaysians would buy EVs at all.

Now we may be entering the stage where the more interesting question is: which EVs will they buy?
