The inaugural Kuala Lumpur Bike Show (KLBS) 2023 is happening throughout this weekend, taking place at the World Trade Centre in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Aside from a slew of new bikes and accessories displayed, this autoshow also features several electric-powered motorcycles, providing much-needed carbon-neutral alternatives on a two-wheel form.

Starting off with Boon Siew Honda (BSH), the marque has displayed the complete line-up of its e-scooter lineup, with most of them built and developed for commercial purposes. This lineup includes one two-wheeler model – the Honda Benly e: – as well as two three-wheeled scooters – the Honda Gyro e: and Gyro Canopy e: – where all three models are powered by two Honda Mobile Power Pack (HMPP) swappable lithium-ion batteries.

Honda Benly e: commercial e-scooter

The Benly e: is exclusively powered by a single, rear-mounted EF07M AC synchronous traction motor that is good for 3.8 HP (2.8 kW) and 13 NM. BSH claims that the Benly e: boasts a cruising speed of 60 KM/H, while the two HMPP batteries grant it with a maximum EV range of 87 KM.

On the other hand, both the Gyro e: and Gyro Canopy e: are powered by a single, rear-mounted EF13M AC electric motor that delivers 4.3 HP (3.2 kW) and 13 NM. As for its maximum range, the Gyro e: can travel as far as 72 KM on a single charge, while the partially-roofed Gyro Canopy e: comes with a slightly higher EV range of 77 KM. Mind you, these figures are only achievable when riding the scooters on its 30 KM/H average cruising speeds.

China-based e-bike marque Arctic Leopard is coming to Malaysia

Aside from e-scooters, the KLBS 2023 also saw one new China-based e-bike brand, Arctic Leopard, entering our local market. Brought in by local electromobility start-up Wira Mobility, the company has introduced two Arctic Leopard e-bikes into our market – the EX.E880 enduro e-bike and the EX.T off-road e-bike series.

Starting with the former, the EX.E880 stood as a full-size enduro-style electric bike, powered by a single electric motor rated at 51 HP (37 kW) and a whopping 880 NM, capable of blasting this bike from nought to 50 KM/H in just 1.6 seconds.

Said motor is juiced by a 105-volt battery with an undisclosed capacity, which grants the EX.E with a maximum EV range of just over 100 KM. This figure can be further extended to up to 190 KM if you frugally riding this e-bike at a constant speed of 30 KM/H. Similar to its ICE counterpart, this enduro e-bike comes with a hand clutch, while boasting EV-specific functions like regenerative braking with adjustable rate.

Moving to the EX.T, this off-road e-bike comes in two variants – the EX.T680 and EX.T 560. Both bikes are powered with a single electric motor, with the former boasting a higher total output of 27 HP (20 kW) and 680 NM, while the latter is only rated at 16 HP (12 kW) and 560 NM.

Both EX.T variants are powered by a slightly smaller 72-volt battery pack compared to the enduro, granting both models a claimed EV range figure between 80 KM to 130 KM, depending on the riding style.
