Geely Aegis Short Blade Battery Launched - Set To Power The Galaxy E5 & Proton e.MAS

Geely Auto Group has unveiled its Aegis Short Blade Battery system based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology which would be powering the soon to be launched Geely Galaxy E5 and Malaysia’s very own first EV under the new Proton e.MAS EV brand.
The Aegis Short Blade Battery, which was developed in-house by the automaker, will boast exceptional battery life, charging speed, and safety, according to Geely Auto's announcement today.
Based on details shared by Geely, the Aegis Short Blade Battery features an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and offers a cycle life of up to 3,500 cycles. This longevity translates to approximately 1 million km of driving with minimal impact on range.

The battery will also feature a compact design language measuring just 580 mm in length, significantly shorter than the more common 960 mm long batteries on the market, thereby enhancing its energy density.
With an average family driving 20,000 km annually, the Aegis Short Blade Batteries service life can extend up to 50 years indirectly benefiting not only the users but also enhances the resale value of used EVs which has received plenty of flags of late.

Additionally, Geely Auto claims the new battery addresses the issue of high internal resistance found in existing long blade batteries. The Aegis Short Blade Battery employs long, thin carbon nanotubes to create efficient ion transmission pathways and incorporates additives that improve film permeability. This design enables lithium ions to travel more easily between electrodes, thus enhancing fast-charging performance.
Performance data shared by Geely Auto indicates that, among blade batteries with similar capacities, the average charging time from 10-80 percent for a long blade battery is 26 minutes, with an average charging rate of 1.61 C. In contrast, the Aegis Short Blade Battery averages 17 minutes and 4 seconds, with an impressive charging rate of 2.45 C.

When it comes to safety, Geely has taken a page out of BYD’s book in testing the batteries durability. Geely Auto’s self-fusing technology on the electrode surface prevents short circuits during accidents. In tests, the battery withstood simultaneous piercing by eight 5-mm steel needles with no adverse effects
Additionally, the battery has passed rigorous tests including seawater corrosion immersion, extreme cold environment, high-frequency pack bottom scraping, 26-ton overweight rolling, single-pack side collision, and fire roasting.

CarNewsChina had also reported that Geely Auto has also applied to trademarks "Geely bulletproof batteries" and "Aegis bulletproof batteries," indicating a military-grade safety level.
As most of us are already aware, the Aegis Short Blade Battery will make its debut in the Geely Galaxy E5, set to launch in early August.
