JMEV 01: China’s Answer to the Lightweight Sports EV Cleared for Launch

After prolonged production delays and regulatory hurdles, the JMEV 01, an all-electric sportscar initially teased as the SC-01, is finally set for launch after securing a sales license from the Chinese government.
Originally conceived by Tianjin Gongjianpai Auto Technology with backing from Xiaomi, the project has since been rebranded under JMEV, a joint venture between Jiangling Motors (JMC) and Renault.

The JMEV 01 is expected to launch at a price of RMB 300,000 (RM 186,000), positioning it as a direct rival to the MG Cyberster. Despite being slightly larger than the Mazda MX-5, the JMEV 01 aims to deliver a performance-focused driving experience akin to traditional mid-engine sportscars.
Measuring 4,106 MM long, 1,830 MM wide, and just 1,170 MM tall, the JMEV 01 maintains a compact and aerodynamic profile. It has a curb weight of 1,365 KG - just 25 KG more than the Porsche 718 Cayman - that reinforces its lightweight sportscar credentials. The design retains the sharp headlights, circular taillights, and sleek two-door coupe styling of the original SC-01 concept.

Power comes from dual synchronous permanent magnet motors supplied by Empower, producing a combined 320 kW (429 HP). This allows the JMEV 01 to reach a top speed of 200 KM/H. In early testing, it clocked a 1 min 6 secs lap time at Beijing’s Goldenport Park Circuit, placing it in the same performance bracket as the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

A mid-mounted ternary NMC battery from CALB powers the vehicle, contributing to balanced weight distribution similar to mid-engine sports cars like the Lotus Elise and Toyota MR2. While the exact battery capacity remains undisclosed, the JMEV 01 boasts a CLTC-rated range of 520 KM (440 KM WLTP) and supports fast charging from 30% to 80% in under 25 minutes.

The car also features multiple drive modes, including front-wheel, rear-wheel, and four-wheel drive configurations, alongside a dedicated Sport mode for enhanced performance.

The JMEV 01’s launch marks a pivotal moment for JMEV, a brand that has struggled to gain traction since its founding in 2015. Production is set to take place at JMEV’s Nanchang facility, which has an annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles.
Success for the JMEV 01 could reinvigorate the brand by blending Porsche-like driving dynamics with Xiaomi-backed innovation, appealing to a younger, tech-savvy buyer demographic.
