MG IM5 & IM6 EV Duo Debuts in the UK – Malaysia Next?

Both the MG IM5 and IM6 EVs had just made their European debut in the UK. Is Malaysia next on the list?
Besides the manic Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, the ongoing Goodwood Festival of Speed 2025 also saw several more ‘civilian’ models making their UK debut. Two of which were MG Motor’s latest EV duo, the MG IM5 and IM6, which are essentially the MG rebadged versions of SAIC-owned EV subsidiary, IM Motor.

The MG IM5 is essentially the MG rebadged version of SAIC's IM L6 EV saloon.
We’ll start with the IM5, which is positioned as the marque’s midsize fastback EV saloon, set to go against the reigning Tesla Model 3 in Europe. It features tons of soft-flowing curves and sharp design elements, while both its sleek roofline and flushed door handles helped to contribute to its low drag coefficient of 0.226.
Other design bits featured here include 19-inch aerodynamic-optimised wheels, full-width LED taillights, a full panoramic glass roof, and many more.

On board, the IM5 gets a pretty typical minimalist cabin setup, with key amenities including the wide 26.3-inch screen that houses both its main infotainment and metre cluster, with the former supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There’s also a smaller 10.5-inch screen near the central console, which houses several driving-related settings and climate control.
Passengers can also find other creature comforts like heated and ventilated seats, a 20-speaker audio system, a 50-watt wireless charger, several metallic accents, and many more.

Moving on to the IM6, this sleek EV is essentially a jacked-up version of the IM5, featuring similar design bits as its saloon twin, albeit in a more popular and practical SUV crossover form. Due to its sizing and body style, the IM6 is touted to be MG’s new Tesla Model Y rival in the Old Continent.

Onboard equipment is also more or less the same as the IM5, as the IM6 adopts the same expansive 26.3-inch display setup, the second 10.5-inch display, as well as the rest of the IM5’s cabin amenities. Given its more practical SUV bodystyle, the IM6 gets more headroom and a larger 665-litre boot space, making it an ideal choice for families over the sportier IM5.

On the powertrain front, the IM5 and IM6 EVs will feature both the single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD powertrain flavours, with the latter reportedly capable of delivering a total system output of up to 742 hp (553 kW) and 802 Nm. This setup allows the dual-motor Performance variant of the IM5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, while the slightly larger IM6 Performance completes the century sprint a tad bit slower at 3.5 seconds.
Battery-wise, the IM5 saloon is offered with 75- and 100-kWh battery options, with the latter allowing the IM5 Long Range a maximum EV range of up to 710 km on a single charge. The IM6, on the other hand, only gets the larger 100 kWh unit, which is good for up to 624 km of EV range in the single-motor Long Range variant.
Regardless of battery specs, both the IM5 and IM6 can support DCFC at up to a 350 kW rate, allowing them to be charged from 10 to 80% in just 17 minutes.

Both the new MG IM5 and IM6 are now available for sale in the UK, with prices starting from £39,450 (RM227,144) for the IM5 saloon and £47,995 (RM276,344) for the IM6 SUV.
While both the IM5 and IM6 just made their European debut in the UK, the EV duo was already on sale in other key right-hand drive (RHD) markets like Australia and Thailand. So, Malaysia next?
