Geely Xingyuan Crowned as China’s Best-Selling Car in 1H 2025

Proton e.MAS 5’s twin, the Geely Xingyuan EV, has been crowned as China’s best-selling car in the first half of 2025.
Proton e.MAS 5’s twin model, the Geely Xingyuan, has been recently crowned as the best-selling passenger vehicle in China for the first half of 2025 (1H 2025). According to CarNewsChina, the compact EV hatch pipped down other popular models like the BYD Seagull and Tesla Model Y for the crown, with a total of 204,940 units sold so far this year.

The Xingyuan’s impressive feat also makes it the only model in the top 20 list to break the 200,000-unit mark, with the second-place and third-place Seagull and Model Y only racking up 174,912 and 171,491 units, respectively. Despite missing out on the top spot, the Tesla Model Y retains its title as the best-selling premium EV in China.

Both the Xiaomi SU7 (left) and the BYD Song Plus (right) also made into the top-20 list.
To no one’s surprise, the top 20 list is dominated by new energy vehicles (NEV), with other popular NEV models like the BYD Qin Plus EV at fifth (163,603 units), the Xiaomi SU7 EV at sixth (155,692 units), and the BYD Song Plus (also known as the Atto 3) at the eighth position with 137,324 units.
Among non-NEV models that made it into the top 20 list are the Geely Xingyue L, Nissan Sylphy, Volkswagen Lavida, and Toyota Camry, to name a few.

Back to the Xingyuan, this compact EV hatch recently hit its 200,000-unit production milestone earlier in May this year. Retailed from only CNY 69,800 (RM41,387) in native China, the Xingyuan quickly became the popular choice among new car buyers in China, overtaking long-time favourites like the aforementioned BYD Seagull and even the cheaper Hongguang Mini EV, with the latter previously crowned China’s best-selling EV a few years back.

Upcoming Proton e.MAS 5 previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025
Closer to home, the Geely Xingyuan will be making its Malaysian debut under the Proton guise, known as the Proton e.MAS 5. Featuring similar specs to its Chinese twin, the e.MAS 5 is dubbed to be the most affordable EV to debut in our market, possibly breaking the RM100,000 price floor as it debuts towards the end of the year.
Can the Proton e.MAS 5 follow the footsteps of its Chinese counterpart to become Malaysia’s best-selling EV model in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below and on our social media channels…
