Proton e.MAS 5: When EV Ownership FINALLY Makes Financial Sense!

The Cost Advantage Becomes Real

For years, Malaysians have debated whether switching to an electric vehicle (EV) truly pays off. Beyond the appeal of new tech with quieter, smoother driving, the question has always been simple: how much will it actually cost to own and run an EV for the next decade?

With the arrival of the Proton e.MAS 5, Malaysia’s first affordable EV, that question now has a clear answer. Proton’s numbers show that daily usability, driving experience, and cost all align to make an EV cheaper to live with than a petrol car.

Charging the e.MAS 5 at off-peak home rates (RM0.4183/kWh) costs an estimated RM12,000 over the course of ten years.. In contrast, a similarly sized petrol hatchback, consuming 8litres/100 km, costs an estimated RM38,000 under current Budi95 pricing. That’s roughly RM25,000 saved over a decade - roughly RM2,500 annually for 2,000 KM of monthly driving.

Maintenance reinforces the advantage. The e.MAS 5 needs only one service annually, costing an estimated RM2,700 over ten years. A petrol equivalent, with twice as many visits, totals over RM6,700.

Combined, an e.MAS 5 owner spends about RM15,000 over a decade, compared to roughly RM45,000 for a petrol owner. That’s close to RM30,000 saved, or about half the e.MAS 5’s purchase price, which can be diverted for other essentials, such as groceries, camping gears, and even your monthly bills/commitments.

Designed for Everyday Malaysian Life

Cost is only part of the story. The e.MAS 5 is built for real Malaysian routines. It avoids the “small EV” label with a B-segment footprint and a cabin that feels like a C-segment car. A long wheelbase, flat floor, and wide-opening doors creates a space typically mirroring larger models.

Storage is practical and versatile. The e.MAS 5 offers a 70-litre frunk, a 375-litre boot, and up to 32 compartments throughout the cabin - perfect for daily essentials, weekend getaways, or transporting durian or seafood in its frunk without stinking up the cabin.

Charging is simple and convenient. With a WLTP-rated 325 KM range, most owners with a 50 KM daily commute need only charge once every six days. For those without home charging, more than 3,500 public chargers nationwide ensures coverage on the move. The live charging map and Proton e.MAS App simplify locating chargers, navigating, and making payments.

Inside, the e.MAS 5 raises expectations for an affordable car. It features a 14.6-inch display with an automotive-grade processor chip, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, and the ATLAS Auto system in English and Malay.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DC fast charging (53 kW for Prime, 71 kW for Premium) from 30–80% in 21 minutes, V2L capability, a powered tailgate, and keyless entry all make it feel premium without the high price.

Launch Price & Early-Bird Rebate

The e.MAS 5 comes in two variants: Prime and Premium. Pricing is RM59,800 for the Prime and RM72,800 for the Premium, making it Malaysia’s most affordable EV.

Proton also includes a 6-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and a separate 8-year or 160,000 KM EV battery and component warranty.

Early adopters benefit further. Bookings placed before Dec 31 receive an RM3,000 launch rebate, bringing prices down to RM56,800 for the Prime and RM69,800 for the Premium.

Safety, Stability, and Confidence on the Road

Safety is central to the e.MAS 5. It uses a proven CATL LFP battery with multi-layer protection. Its Geely sibling has accumulated over 142 million driving hours in China without collision-induced fires or major recalls.

The car features six airbags, a reinforced body structure, and twelve ADAS functions including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detection. Rear-wheel-drive and multi-link suspension provide a smooth, confident ride. The 85 kW motor offers brisk city acceleration, while the best-in-class 4.95-metre turning radius makes tight roads and parking effortless.

Taken together, the Proton e.MAS 5 proves that EV ownership in Malaysia can make financial sense. With up to RM30,000 saved over ten years compared to a petrol car, it shows that switching to electric isn’t just about technology - it’s a smart, money-saving choice that fits seamlessly into daily life.
